For cleaning the carpet, What is the alternative to a vacuum cleaner?

In Chicago airport, I noticed the custodial sweeping the carpet with this stick thing, which required no electricity. It seemed as effective as a vacuum cleaner. What is it called and where can I get one?
Does it work well?

It’s called a Bissel and you can buy one at Target, Kmart, Walmart, etc. They work wonderfully in picking up surface dirt but stick at picking up the deep stuff.

It works for particulates but not for fine dirt like dust and skin cells. You would still need to use a vacuum occasionally.
Basically it flings the dirt up and it is caught in a small tray, or like the Swiffer one, it is caught on a sticky sheet like fly paper.
You can get the Swiffer version about anywhere.

I would add my vote to the others. It is fine for low pile carpets, and for surface dirt. A vacuum for most carpets is the best way to clean.

A hungry dog!
Sorry I couldn’t resist the question!
Try a pawn shop they have vaccuums way cheaper than Wal-mart even! I just got a mini vaccuum at a pawn shop it was $15. I went to Wal-mart and the same exact one was $65. Hope this helps!
